Peer Sessions # 112 @ Artquest Salon ONLINE (Painting Salon)

Oliver Palmer // Lee Suh

6.30-9.30pm Weds 13th November 2024

Notes

Oliver Palmer showed an as yet untitled installation, a tableau featuring a life-size screen prints of a group of people, one of them ex-PM Margaret Thatcher, with a suspended backdrop of hand painted floral wallpaper. He also showed a diptych of two paintings, each hand painted floral wallpapers. The participants quickly identified Thatcher and the family from a 1980s photoshoot used to promote the Right to Buy policy. The discussion revolved around issues of class, taste and artifice.

Lee Suh shared collaged images (Boundary dispute 1 and Boundary dispute 2) from a recent zine, alongside a painting, “Boarderland” (pic 2) made with plaster and home paint on wooden panel. The group identified in the photos and zine evidence of some kind of boundary dispute, with reference to how we might define a boundary in legal, political, social and personal terms. The painting elicited more visceral responses, with participants feeling its textured ‘mouldy’-looking surface expressed frustration, disgust and distress.
